TYPO3 - What Speaks In Its Favor?
Variety of features and flexibility: these are the advantages of the CMS TYPO3
Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal: anyone who wants to run their own website today with comparatively little effort will find plenty of free content management systems (CMS) that make the once very complex steps to a first web presence much easier. TYPO3, on the other hand, is often viewed with suspicion by aspiring site owners due to its higher complexity. And yet TYPO3 offers many advantages over Wordpress, Joomla and co. that speak in favor of this open-source CMS.
Like the content management systems mentioned above, TYPO3 is open-source software, meaning the CMS can be downloaded free of charge from typo3.org and used at no further cost under the GNU General Public License. As with other content management systems, there are also thousands of different add-ons for TYPO3, so-called "extensions", which allow additional functions such as entire online shops, forums or newsletters to be integrated.
Compared to Wordpress, Drupal and Joomla, however, TYPO3 offers a considerably larger feature set and is therefore usually used more in the (semi-)professional sector.
Security and stability
The more limited user base results in greater security. Since TYPO3 is mainly used in German-speaking countries, the number of attacks on the system is reduced. For Wordpress, for example, this risk is significantly higher, since it is more widespread worldwide and thus offers a more rewarding target for large-scale attacks from all over the world.
Moreover, TYPO3 was developed with security in mind from the very beginning and is continuously extended and improved, which is an important point especially for medium-sized and large companies in Germany. TYPO3 offers new versions with what is known as "Long Term Support" (LTS), meaning that this version is supplied with security updates and bugfixes by the development team for at least three years, even after a newer version has been released. This LTS period begins on the release date.
Another point that is important for companies is stability and performance. As described further below, this makes it possible to manage several different websites within one system. TYPO3 offers stability, among other things, because it is designed for scalability and can handle large numbers of visitors while keeping the website stable and performant.
What speaks in its favor? The advantages of TYPO3 over content management systems like Wordpress
One of the biggest advantages of TYPO3 over other CMS, such as Wordpress, is its sophisticated permissions and access management. From the very beginning, TYPO3 was developed with a strong focus on a clear separation between content on the one hand and design, configuration and administration on the other. That's why TYPO3 has two fundamental user types: so-called editors, who maintain content such as texts, images or videos in the frontend, while administrators take care of managing and maintaining the infrastructure in the backend. These are not job titles, but rather user roles within the TYPO3 CMS.
This separation of user roles naturally exists in other systems too, but it is usually not as firmly anchored. Wordpress, for example, now also allows different user groups with graduated permissions. However, hardly any other CMS achieves this as granularly and flexibly as TYPO3.
Another advantage of TYPO3 lies in the easy way it lets you manage different websites with just a single TYPO3 installation. This way, users only need one username with an associated password, yet can still work across different sites. In the backend, in turn, images and other media files can be used across various pages without having to be uploaded to the CMS again for each page and taking up storage space there. In the same way, parts of a website, such as product catalogs or online shops, can be used on other websites within the same TYPO3 installation with just a few clicks.
TYPO3 also offers an extremely convenient way to set up multilingual websites, which other free content management systems can hardly offer in this form. For this, the content of a website is simply created in different languages and assigned to the respective pages in TYPO3. The CMS then pulls in the appropriate content block depending on the selected language and embeds it on the page. This means that entire websites don't have to be created completely in various language versions — only the content that is actually needed in different languages.
This flexibility comes at the cost of higher complexity
Where there is so much light, there is of course also shadow, and so the complexity already mentioned at the beginning is TYPO3's greatest weakness. The enormous flexibility and feature richness simply come quite clearly at the expense of simplicity and clarity. While the backends of Wordpress, Drupal or Joomla visibly strive for a simple user interface, TYPO3 follows the credo "function over beauty". While administrators can quite variably hide unneeded functions for different users, so that editorial roles sometimes also find a fairly tidy backend, anyone working as an administrator with TYPO3 must not be afraid of nested tree structures.
A much bigger issue, however, is likely to be the necessary programming skills in PHP and TypoScript, without which the installation, configuration and maintenance of a TYPO3 environment is hardly conceivable. Meanwhile, many web hosts do offer TYPO3 installation with just one click, but while with Wordpress you're at least in principle ready to go within a few hours by additionally installing just a couple of plugins and themes, with a basic TYPO3 installation you can't do much more than fill static webpages with HTML code.
But anyone who takes on this challenge, or makes use of professional support from a commercial TYPO3 agency, will find in TYPO3 one of the most comprehensive free content management systems, which knows hardly any limits when it comes to feature richness and flexibility. A lively and large community has also grown up around TYPO3, which is not only responsible for the numerous extensions, but also provides tutorials, guides and support.
